Daring Cooks – October 2011 – Moo Shu
Another great daring cooks challenge. I had never before made or even tried moo shu. And for the first time I actually prepared this challenge the day it was posted (Sept 17th). It was the weekend after D and I got back from Greece, the weather was bad, and let’s face it, after you’ve spent 8 days climbing ancient ruins and having your breath taken away by amazing views, Washington DC just isn’t going to seem so exciting anymore. So, instead of moping around, and whining about how I wished I was still in Greece I decided to put my energy towards the freshly posted daring cooks challenge. The mandatory components were the moo shu pancakes, a stir fry and a complementary sauce. Hardly in the creative mood, I just went with the recipes posted. Everything was delicious. The stir fry was made with pork, cabbage, mushrooms, etc which was a nice change from the usual beef stir fry I make. The pancakes I loved as well — great alternative to rice with your stir fry. And hoisin sauce made from scratch? That certainly didn’t disappoint either. Eating the dish can get a little bit messy seeing as how you put the stir fry into the pancake, drizzle the sauce over the top, wrap the whole thing up, and eat it with your hands (at least I did). But since D and I are far from our first date there’s really no shame in eating like a slob – sauce dripping down your palms and stir fry ripping through the pancake. Hmmm. Leftovers are just as good with rice.
